how often should you do crossfit

If you’ve been wondering, how often should you do CrossFit to stay in shape? you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions people ask when they start training, or when they’re trying to balance fitness with work, family and everything else going on.

The short answer is this: for most people, three to four sessions per week is enough to stay in great shape.

But let’s explain why.

The Sweet Spot for Staying Fit

CrossFit combines strength training, conditioning and skill work in one session. Because of that intensity, you do not need to train every day to see results.

Training three to four times per week gives your body enough stimulus to build and maintain strength, improve fitness levels and support healthy body composition. Just as importantly, it allows proper recovery between sessions. Recovery is where your body adapts and actually gets fitter.

If your goal is general fitness rather than competition, this frequency works extremely well long term.

If You’re New to CrossFit

If you are just starting out, you do not need to jump straight into four or five classes per week. In fact, that can often lead to unnecessary soreness and fatigue.

Two to three sessions per week for the first few weeks is ideal. This gives your muscles, joints and nervous system time to adjust to the new movements and intensity. As your fitness improves, you can gradually increase your frequency if it suits your schedule.

A great way to get started is to try out Perpetua’s CrossFit Academy, it's perfect for people who are new to CrossFit and want to learn everything you’d need to know for classes.

If You Want to Push Performance

If you are training for something specific, like competitions, or you simply want to accelerate progress, you might train four to five times per week.

At this level, recovery becomes even more important. Sleep, nutrition and mobility work all play a big role in keeping performance high and injuries low. More sessions require more structure and intention.

What About Training Once a Week?

If you only train once per week, you may maintain a small base level of fitness, but it will be difficult to make noticeable progress. Fitness improves through consistent exposure to training stimulus. One session rarely provides enough volume to drive real change.

Consistency always wins.

If you are new to it and trying to build up endurance, other forms of strength training like a Tread and Shred or Rhythm Ride are a great way to gain strength while giving your body time to recover between CrossFit training sessions.

The Role of Rest

When thinking about how often you should do CrossFit, rest days need to be part of the conversation. Because the workouts are demanding, most people benefit from at least one or two rest days per week.

Rest does not mean doing nothing. Light movement such as walking, stretching or mobility work can help you recover while still staying active.

So, How Often Should You Do CrossFit?

If your goal is simply to stay in shape, three to four sessions per week is ideal. If you are new, start with two to three. If performance is the priority, four to five may suit you.

The best plan is one you can maintain consistently. A sustainable routine done week after week will always deliver better results than an aggressive schedule that leads to burnout.
