Craig Shares His Story

It all began at the tender age of 17 when Craig, alongside a buddy, ventured into the world of fitness, inspired by athletic pursuits in football and hurling. His initiation into the gym was nothing out of the ordinary—a classic Globo gym experience where the weightlifting routine was somewhat improvised and arguably lacking in form.
Craig recalls, "We just started doing, literally, we were doing bench press and hand cleans in the gym... with some questionable form."
The CrossFit Introduction
It was during this time that a friend, who played for the Dublin minors and had already dipped his toes into a structured gym program, introduced Craig to a fresh and invigorating training style— CrossFit. Credit goes to Christian O'Hara, who stumbled across some CrossFit videos and shared this new discovery. Fueled by curiosity and a desire to upgrade their gym sessions, the duo incorporated CrossFit elements into their workouts—albeit with "very, very questionable form."
Stepping into a Broader Fitness World
After some time spent under the guidance of Rob Flanagan, a personal trainer, things started to take a serious turn. Craig's foray into Rob's newly opened strength and conditioning gym acted as the catalyst for a deeper immersion into the CrossFit community. His commitment to training deepened, spurred on by the competitive spirit of those around him.
A Competitive Edge
Craig always had a competitive streak, courtesy of his sports background, but it was amplified when he saw tangible improvements and the thrill of competition in CrossFit. The fascination with beating others in classes evolved into participating in in-house competitions and eventually, small competitions across Ireland.
Anecdotal musings from Craig: "Once you start seeing yourself improve a little bit against other people in class... you're like, alright, I can be good at this."
The Growth of CrossFit in Ireland
Reflecting on the past 10-12 years, Craig has observed a transformative change in the Irish CrossFit landscape. Initially, competition was the primary motivator for many gym goers, but over time the community realized the broader benefits of CrossFit beyond just competing—highlighting its role in staying in shape, building a community, and establishing a solid social foundation.
A New Chapter at Perpetua
Craig's coaching career took off interestingly after returning from a stint in Australia. Perpetua’s own Owen McGregor needed a coach while away, and Craig was the man for the job, taking him through the rigorous process of coaching, which started with shadowing and gradually evolved to full-fledged sessions.
Rising through the Ranks
Fast forward to today, and Craig has not only expanded his repertoire by heading the CrossFit program at Perpetua but he balanced his role by coaching Tread and Tread classes too. Drawing inspiration from global fitness trends and his experience, Craig helped shape and grow the community at both Wimble Lane and Lime Street.
Adrenaline Weekend: HYROX and Dublin Marathon
In recounting a particularly notable experience, Craig shared the wild decision to participate in the HYROX Dublin event and the Dublin Marathon back-to-back! His HYROX preparation, thick with strategy and planning, taught him valuable lessons in training and nutrition—particularly the pivotal role of fueling mid-run.
Reflecting on his experience: "I changed my whole idea of nutrition around training completely... You got to be fueled up."
The marathon story was a testament to resilience, community spirit, and the sheer triumph of crossing the finish line—despite challenges such as the IT band tightness and post-High Rocks fatigue. It was a reminder of the mental fortitude needed for such feats and the importance of rest and recovery.
Looking Forward
As for the future, Craig isn't one to idle. We can expect to see him back in the competitive CrossFit arena in team events, another High Rocks challenge, and perhaps, a more tempered approach to marathon participation—pointing, instead, to the allure of half marathons.
