Training for Hyrox Málaga

Preparation is everything when it comes to Hyrox races. The combination of running and functional movements demands a strategic approach to training.

Building Strength and Endurance

To succeed in any Hyrox race, you need to balance running with functional strength. Incorporate weekly sessions focused on the event’s signature movements, such as sled pushes and pulls, wall balls, farmer’s carries, and burpee broad jumps. At Perpetua Fitness, our Hyrox-specific classes are designed to help you master these signature movements. Pair these then with endurance runs to build the stamina needed for alternating between running and workouts.

Simulate Race Conditions

One of the best ways to train for Hyrox is to replicate the race format. Perform mock events with 1km runs followed by functional exercises to build your confidence and practice transitions. This will help you identify areas for improvement and fine-tune your pacing strategy.

Racing in Málaga’s Climate

The Mediterranean climate of Málaga can be a challenge for athletes used to cooler training climates, like Ireland. Preparing your body for a slightly warmer environment is essential.

Heat Adaptation Training

To acclimate to Málaga’s temperatures in the lead up to your race, try training in warmer environments, whether that’s using heated rooms or wearing layers to simulate the heat.

Hydration is Key

Start increasing your hydration levels in the weeks leading up to the race. Proper hydration isn’t just about drinking water on race day - it’s about maintaining fluid balance consistently. Incorporate electrolyte drinks into your routine to replace the minerals lost through sweat.

Acclimatise Beforehand

If you’re arriving in Málaga a few days early, take the time to adjust to the heat. Go for light jogs or short workouts during midday to mimic race conditions. For those training at home, you can adapt by layering up during runs or using heated spaces to simulate the climate.

Dressing for the Heat

On race day, opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics that wick sweat away. A good pair of sweat-resistant socks and ventilated running shoes can make all the difference in keeping your feet cool and blister-free. A hat or visor can also help shield you from the sun and maintain focus.

Nutrition for Hyrox Race Day

Fueling your body properly is just as important as your training when preparing for the Hyrox Málaga 2025 race. In the days leading up to the event, focus on incorporating more carbohydrates into your meals to maximise glycogen stores. Foods like pasta, rice, sweet potatoes, and oatmeal are ideal choices to ensure your energy reserves are topped up.

On race morning, aim for a simple, balanced breakfast about 2–3 hours before the start. Options like a banana with peanut butter, toast with honey, or a small bowl of porridge will provide steady energy without weighing you down.

During the race, you should focus on maintaining consistent energy levels. Practice in your training sessions with energy gels, chews, or electrolyte drinks during your training to figure out what works best for your body. Then consume these at regular intervals during the event to help you avoid hitting the dreaded “wall” and keep you performing at your peak.

Congrats you’ve crossed the finish line! Recovery is the next priority for your body, so refuel with a meal rich in protein and carbohydrates, like a recovery shake and a balanced meal, to support muscle repair and replenish your energy stores, setting you up for the next step in your fitness journey.
